The study of matter is one of the basic topics of chemistry 101. It is the atom and molecules that basically makes up matter. An atom is the one that is only composed of a single element, like gold, silver, and potassium. Water and carbon dioxide is made up of two or more atoms and are called molecules. A two different substance can also be called a matter.
It is the atoms that make up any matter. But atoms are not the smallest units of matter. The most basic component of atoms are proton and neutrons. The negatively charged particles are electrons while the positively charge are the protons and the neutrons don't have any charged. The number of protons present o each atom differentiates the from one another. A hydrogen atom has only one proton while a carbon atom has 12. Neutral particles do not have any charge, and that's basically what an atom is. The number of protons and neutrons in an atom is equal. Molecules is defined as the combination of one or more atom that is chemical bond together. Depending on the chemical properties, the type of bonds in a molecule is defined. The one that has a lesser amount is known s the solute, and the one which has more is the solvent. One example is sea water, the solute is salt while the water is the solution. In order for solutes and solvents to dissolve each other they should have the same polarity if they do not have, then nothing will be dissolved.
